Product Spotlight: Excel 2007

Do you use Excel or equivalent software? You might wonder what anyone ever did before the software was created, because for those of us that use it, it’s a diverse application. You can do almost anything with it!

This month LearnKey’s product spotlight is Microsoft Excel 2007. In this article, we will explore real-world examples of how Excel can be used, emphasizing the importance and usefulness of learning these skills.

So what is this software and why are so many people addicted to using it? It’s a spreadsheet, it’s a graphic table, it’s a layout template, it’s a statistical analysis worksheet, it’s a scenario tool...I can go on and on. Most spreadsheets have more built-in formulas than anyone could possibly use, a teacher can find grade point averages at the click of a cell, your accounting department can use it to calculate sales tax and total invoices, and a spreadsheet can be used as source documents in mail merges and all kinds of other database functions. Get the picture? If you want to get a job, keep a job, enhance your skills or make sure you are the top choice - your spreadsheet skills can really make a difference. This is where LearnKey's Excel course comes in. With on-demand training, not only can you learn the skills necessary to stand out to an employer, but you can also go back and review the course again to refresh your memory on anything you might have not picked up on the first time around. If you or your company has been keeping up with the latest versions, you can get started with our Excel 2007 course. If you're still using an older version, that's okay too, we have courses for Excel 2003, 2002, and all the way back to Excel 2000.

When you learn the basics of excel you can manipulate numbers, create prediction and trends, create graphics and easy budgets. For an individual you can easily track your expenses and income, create optional savings or spending and quickly see the bottom line. For any small business you could run a basic payroll spreadsheet to track hourly rates, taxes and net pay amounts. Businesses can gather data and ask ‘What if income increases by a percentage’, then see what the effect would be on the bottom line. It's easy to make changes to the data and instantly see the results. Some changes are good some aren’t, but with a spreadsheet created properly you can predict the results if income goes up or down, expenses go up or down, or maybe like today’s environment, things are going in every direction.

One other important factor with Excel – it’s actually easy! With the right training, Excel can be taught in just a few moments. The other thing I like is even someone who doesn’t understand the data can input it, format it so it’s easy to read, and then get it to someone who knows how to manipulate it. I often have some of my most basic Excel users create worksheets for me that end up with incredible uses for my business. I can easily check their work and modify any formulas through the whole workbook. Spreadsheets are critical for today’s business users.

The basic spreadsheet user, if they can show they have the skill, is employable - today, now, and tomorrow. So how does a potential employer know if they are capable? Easy, industry certifications can establish the baseline. Entrance testing on applications will show the skills clearly. At LearnKey we have tools to train Excel, test Excel and even tools for pre-testing to ensure your applicants have the basic spreadsheet skills needed in today’s world.
