If you think your job is safe in this troubled economy, then you don’t need to read any further…or do you? What’s your competitive edge? Efficiency. When you can do the work of two people, because you know how to use software better, or can multi-task in management, your value statement will be much higher than those that don’t possess the same capabilities.
Survival tip #2: Knowledge is Power. Quality work cannot be sacrificed in the name of “efficiency,” so you need to know more about more things... How? Any way you can! There are so many ways to learn things today: Books, Online learning and seminars among them. The first thing to do is find out what systems your company has in place for you to gain a specific skill set that you think would be beneficial to you and your company. Seek out ways to cross train on business critical processes within your company.
Survival tip #3: Somebody has to do something...and everybody is somebody! Take it upon yourself to learn the new things you need to learn—even if your company can’t compensate you. Buy products to get you where you need to be. After all it’s your job and your future that needs the investment. Set goals and hold yourself accountable for the outcomes.
